How to Get Honest Feedback During a Scent Trial

A scent trial only tells you something if you listen well while it runs. The most useful feedback tends to be quiet and unprompted, not collected through questionnaires. Knowing whose reaction counts most, and how to gather it without making the scent the centre of attention, turns a short trial into a clear decision.

The most honest feedback often comes from the people who work in the space all day.

Start with your staff

Your team is in the space for a whole shift, so they notice early whether a scent feels pleasant or becomes tiring. Ask them one at a time and in private. In a group, people tend to agree politely; on their own, they tell you what they really think. Their comfort is the clearest signal you will get.

If the people who work in the space all day find a scent tiring, it isn't the right scent, however much visitors like it.

Read visitors by what they do

Most visitor feedback is never spoken. Look for relaxed body language, people staying a little longer, and the occasional comment that the place smells nice, made without anyone asking. Avoid asking visitors directly about the scent: once you point it out, their answers change.

Skip the formal survey

A questionnaire draws attention to the scent and colours the replies. Quiet check-ins with staff and simple observation of visitors give you more honest signals. If you want some structure, a short note each day is enough.

What to write down

  • How it felt on arrival and later in the day.
  • Any unprompted comment, positive or negative.
  • Any complaint, including who raised it and where.

One line per day is plenty, and anyone on the team can keep it.

Be careful with your own nose

The person who chose the scent is often the least reliable judge, because they want it to work. Give more weight to the room than to your own first impression.

Listen for what nobody says

The most valuable signals are often the ones you never ask for: a colleague mentioning that the scent now feels like part of the space, a visitor who compliments the space unprompted, and the complaint that never arrives. Once you learn to notice these, the decision becomes much easier.

Comparing scents

If you are considering more than one scent, judge each one on similar days and keep separate notes. A scent that impresses on the first morning isn't always the one people still like at the end of a long week. If you would like to compare another scent from our Scent Library, ask our team how that works.

How the DuraScent trial works

After the free site survey, we install the scent we recommend and you try it free for 3 days, with the machine running on a schedule that follows your opening hours, 10 hours a day by default. The intensity for each area is set during the survey and trial, so your team's notes help us confirm it before the service starts. Once the service is running, the level is reviewed at each monthly Preventive Maintenance Visit.

A trial shows how a scent feels in your space. It isn't a guarantee of higher sales.
