Scent Branding: Why a Pleasant Smell Isn't the Same as a Brand Scent

Most businesses think about their logo, colours and music. Fewer think about how their space smells, even though scent is one of the few brand signals people take in without trying. Scent branding means using a consistent, distinctive scent as part of your identity, so that customers come to connect that scent with you.

A brand scent is chosen like a logo: simple, distinctive and used the same way everywhere.

Pleasant isn't the same as recognisable

Almost any good fragrance smells pleasant. A brand scent is something more: it fits your brand, it's used in the same way everywhere, and it stays the same over time. A random pleasant smell that changes every few months makes a space nicer for a while, but it never becomes yours.

What is an odotype?

An odotype is the scent equivalent of a logo: a fragrance chosen or created to represent a brand. Like a logo, it works best when it's simple, distinctive and used consistently. Research on retail scent suggests simple, easy-to-recognise scents tend to work better than complicated blends[1], which is a useful principle when choosing one.

How a scent becomes linked to a brand

Research has found that a pleasant ambient scent helped people remember and recognise brands, especially brands they didn't already know[2]. That link builds through repetition: the same scent, met again and again in the same context. Three things make the difference:

  • Fit. The scent should match what the brand stands for. A fresh, clean scent suits a clinic or a modern office; a warm, woody scent might suit a boutique hotel or a furniture showroom.
  • Consistency. The same scent at every visit, in every branch, at a level that's noticeable but never overpowering.
  • Time. Recognition grows over months of consistent use, not in a week.

Techniques that support a brand scent

One main scent, used everywhere.

Choose one scent for the customer-facing areas of every location, rather than different scents for different branches.

Zoning by touchpoint.

Let the scent lead at the entrance and reception, keep it softer in lounges and corridors, and leave dining areas, treatment rooms and tester counters unscented.

Carry it to events.

Use the same scent at launches, openings and exhibitions so the experience outside your premises feels like a visit to your brand.

Keep it running properly.

A brand scent that runs out or varies between visits works against you. Routine refills and maintenance are part of branding, not an afterthought.

Library scent or custom signature scent?

A small business can practise scent branding with a well-chosen library scent, used consistently. A custom signature scent goes further, because it belongs only to your brand. Many businesses start with the library and develop their own scent later.

How DuraScent helps

We help you choose from our Scent Library of 40+ fragrances from European fragrance houses, or develop a custom signature scent. We set it up at each location, from standalone units to HVAC scenting, and keep it consistent with routine refills and a monthly Preventive Maintenance Visit. We can also scent your events with the same fragrance.

Scent supports atmosphere and brand impressions. It isn't a guarantee of higher sales or loyalty.
